GDP of Canadian Provinces, 2009–2013 How did the economies of Canadian provinces evolve from 2009 to 2013? By July 2009, the Bank of Canada had declared the recesesion to be over and Canada was on recovery during the period shown on the graph. As expected, there is a huge discrepancy between the scales of economies within Canada. Ontario's GDP is higher than many (if not most) of the provinces combined and shows singularly important Ontario's economy is to the rest of Canada. Another point of interest is Alberta's massive growth during this period. Alberta's economy is centered on the petroleum industry; consequently, the rise is most likely the effect of the rising oil prices that began in 2009.
